★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 北出丸から本丸に向かう途中、太鼓門に上る坂です。城の正面となる場所に椿を植えた理由は…「敵が侵入してきても椿のごとく首がコロリと落ちるように・・」と椿を植えた…との説あり。坂の内側には桜、外側の土手の上に椿が植えられてます。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 会津若松城の防御の要の、｢皆殺丸｣ト呼ばれていた北出丸を何とか突破した攻方は、この約40mの長い土橋の坂を登らなければ、本丸にたどり着けません。城方は本丸側の横から射撃が出来る構造(横矢掛り)になっているため、｢横手坂｣と呼ばれていました。また、攻方の首を簡単に取れる(討ち取れる)という意味から、花の落ち方が首から落ちているようで、武士からは｢縁起が悪い｣と嫌われていた、椿の花に例えて｢椿坂｣とも呼ばれていました。
