不退院玄証が江戸湯島に元和8年（1622）創建、元禄17年湯島内を移転したといいます。
関東大震災で罹災、区画整理に伴い、昭和4年井荻へ移転、昭和16年当地へ移転したそうです。
墓地には狂歌師三陀羅法師（文化十一年1814没）、三代目都々逸坊扇歌（明治十三年没）の墓碑があります。
