応永五年(1398)、後醍醐天皇の孫 尹良親王は、信濃南朝方の関東の橋頭堡である寺尾城に拠り、新田一族の世良政義の支援を受けて、退勢の挽回をはかったが、同十九年平井城主上杉憲定に攻略されて落城。親王は信州諏訪に逃れたと伝えられている。南北朝時代末期の城堡は、打ち続く戦乱により、急速な進歩を遂げ、千早城型の天険を利用した堡塁が生まれた。寺尾城も同様な山城で、上城・中城・前城それぞれ4km程度距てて配され、丘陵一帯を抑えていた。これによって」守られていた中城の北の「館」が、尹良親王の館と考えられる。姥山は皇子に使えた姥の居た処と伝えられ、この地の墓石に菊水の家紋も残っている。
