★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 宗清は大叔父に当たる留守政景の孫娘を正室に迎えたが、もともと病弱だったこともあってか、跡取りもないまま34年(寛永11年)7月22日35歳で亡くなった。地元では、宗清が釣りをしていると上流で山伏がコメをといで川が濁ったため、怒った宗清が山伏を切り捨てたところ、山伏のたたりで宗清の体調が悪くなって死んだという民話が残っている。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 元和2（1616）年、伊達宗清が居城を吉岡に移すのに伴い、現在地に移され建立されました。庫裡は江戸時代の建築で、県内では瑞巌寺の庫裡に次ぐ歴史あるものとして町指定有形文化財に指定されています。また、山門も江戸時代からのものです。このほか境内には宗清と、政宗の側室で宗清の養母となった飯坂の局の墓があります。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 大和町の中心街、かつての吉岡宿にある天皇寺は伊達政宗の三男であった伊達宗清にゆかりがある寺院です。今でも伊達宗清の墓が墓地に残っています。
庫俚と呼ばれる台所は大和町の有形指定文化財で松島の瑞岩寺に次ぐ古い庫俚の建物のようです。
山門も同じく江戸時代建立で柱の脇には古い銅鐘がポツンと置かれています。
また境内にはいくつもの庭園があります。裏にある「ひさご池」も中々味のある池です。

お寺巡りにはあまり興味がありませんが、江戸時代に造られたという山門に興味が湧いて訪れてみました。
