Tamagawa Hot Spring - Semboku

Interesting place to see sulphuric vents and hokulite stones. The 1km+trail takes about 30-50mins to view, inclusive of photo taking

Tamagawa onsen hotspring is one of the greatest hotsprings in Japan. It is wild,　strongly acidic and effective to cure many kinds of disease. There are many people to care themselves from all over Japan.

Water in this onsen is very acidic. It may take a bit of getting used to, as any tiny injury in your skin could burn from the acid. Aside from that, the onsen was very relaxing, and the surrounding areas are worth walking around to explore

I stopped here twice while cycling around Aomori-Akita. It’s full of sweet seniors who come for the supposed “healing” properties of the onsen which is believed to cure cancer because it originates deep in a radioactive zone of the earth. Decent buffet. Would go again!

in our onsen quest, Tamagawa Hot Spring was an excellent choice. Excellent in that the service at Shin Tamagawa Hot spring was good, staff were welcoming and helpful, the food was healthy and yummy, and we loved the hot spring waters even though it was a challenge to spend more than a few minutes in the highly acidic waters. There are a number of private and public baths with varying acidic levels. As the waters have therapeutic qualities, there is a drinking station with clear instructions (in Japanese – Google translate comes in handy) on how much to consume daily. Water levels are also varied and there is an option of steam baths in wooden boxes. Have to say that they do resemble coffins. :p All the baths are segregated except for the family (private) baths that need to be reserved. In between breaks from the baths, we went to the gym area to play table tennis. Just need to book the slot and requests for the bats and ping pong balls at the Reception Counter. Tamagawa Onsen is a hot spring with a HEART, a hot spring of HOPE that left an indelible mark on me. I was particularly touched and humbled when I saw a lady clenching her breasts in her hands and saying her prayers while submerged in the healing waters of Tamagawa. At that moment, I was about to slip into the waters to enjoy its healing qualities but decided to give the lady her privacy. I slip away quietly to another bath nearby for some self-reflection. We befriended a Japanese-American lady who brings her mum periodically to Tamagawa Onsen as the hot spring waters helped her mum to walk better. She shared that for some Japanese an annual health pilgrimage to Tamagawa is a must have. We were there in winter and there were huge snow mobiles to bring us to Shin Tamagawa where we stayed and the older Tamagawa Hot spring area. Even though the facilities at the older part were more dated, it is a worthwhile visit to experience its history. The route to the hot spring is simply beautiful with serene and wintry landscape, tons of snow and frozen waters. Thank you so much Shin Tamagawa for the healthy and yummy food and the opportunity to bath in the healing waters. This experience is a good reminder to appreciate and treasure good health. May all enjoy the healing benefits of Tamagawa. PS: Two meals are provided. For lunch, either you do without, bring along food you can eat with minimal cooking (e.g. instant noodles) or patronise the shop for hot buns etc

Amazing place. This is a hot spring of hydrochloric acid of PH 1.0, unusual in the world. You can see the site where 9000 liters of hot water spouts per minute. It is comparable to Yellowstone. Many Japanese believe that healing difficulties will cure, so it is better to take care when you visit.
