Chaya Shirojiro, a wealthy merchant in Kyoto, had settled in Shimmachi-dori Takoyakushi, Nakagyo-ku until the sixth generation, but moved to this area due to the great fire of Hoei 5 (1708). This land was given as a building site when the first Kiyonobu (1545-96) served Ieyasu Tokugawa. This stone marker shows the ruins of the mansion. Chaya Shiro Jiro A wealthy merchant in Kyoto who was most active from the Momoyama period to the early Edo period, the head of the family was named "Chaya Shirojiro" for generations. He is said to have financially supported Ieyasu Tokugawa as a merchant. He was said to be the three chiefs of Kyoto along with the Kakukura and Goto families. It is said that his first to third generations were at their peak. The first Chaya Shirojiro Although it is ostensibly a kimono shop in Kyoto, it is said that Ieyasu, Kiyonobu Nakajima, was secretly engaged in intelligence activities. At the time of the Honnoji Incident, Ieyasu was the first to report this to Ieyasu, who led the unarmed Ieyasu over Iga, rescued him from the predicament, became a lifesaver, and made a leap forward as Ieyasu's covertness. Chaya Shirojiro Residence Ruins The first Chaya Kiyonobu built a mansion in the current Chaya district, which was given as a building site by Ieyasu Tokugawa. Today, the stone marker shows the ruins of the mansion. On the wall of Zuirenji Temple, which is a little down the intersection of Shinmachi-dori and Takoyakushi-dori, where the floats of the Gion Festival come out, there is a piece tag of "Chaya Shirojiro / Doshinshiro Yashiki Ruins". The mansion of the Chaya family, who was said to be one of the three chiefs of Kyoto, was a wealthy merchant who made a fortune in the Shuinsen trade. The main residence of Takoyakushi Shimo was burned down by a large fire in 1708 (Hoei 5) and moved to Ogawa-dori, Kamigyo-ku. For this reason, this area is still called Chayamachi. Since we had a villa on Uryuyama in Kitashirakawa, Sakyo-ku, the hills around the area were called "Chayama" in the olden days. It was also called Mt. Anobu because it was a substitute for "Anobu Nakajima". It is still called "Chayama". There is also "Chayama" station at Eizan station.
