御祭神は高皇産霊大神。配祀として建速須佐男尊・大国主尊。高皇産霊大神の別名として高木神がありますので，社名の由来はこれにてはっきりしました。創建年代は不詳ですが，寛保3（1743）年の棟札があることからそれ以前となりましょう。境内の由緒書によれば，村祈祷について「氏子中の青年衆ご神体を奉担して部落内各戸を訪問しご祈祷を行う。戦前は本宮千葉県山倉大神山伏姿で訪ね法螺貝を吹き鳴らしご神体を背負い次の部落まで送る行事は現在は取り止めている。」とあり，山倉大神の御祭神の一柱は高皇産霊大神でしたので，ますますはっきりしたというもので，なかなか御由緒どころか御祭神さえ分からない社が多い（茨城県では）中で，こうして由緒書があると大助かりです。農地と林の狭い道をしばらく走り辿りつい居た御神域は，明るく涼やかな地でした。
