Learned a lot about the history of Japanese whiskey. The museum is informative, and free. However, you need to register. The tour needs to be booked well in advance, and it always seems to be full. But looking at the reviews, it’s quite worth it. I guess it’s for people really interested in the Suntory brand, or fans. Otherwise, I think one can already learn a lot by reading in the free museum.

Sadly the tour was fully booked (and only in Japanese) so we visited the museum and did some tastings. Tastings are anywhere from 100-3,000 Yen per 15ml. We tried around 7 whiskeys and loved 5-6 of them! The museum flows really well and is interesting. The building is a beautiful setup. Recommended for a rainy day while staying in Kyoto. Easy to access via the JR train. Only negative is the gift shop. Why wouldn’t they sell all their Whisky?! We wanted to buy two bottles of the Hibiki Harmony and 17 year old single malt but neither were available to buy, in fact none of the 7 Whiskys we tried were available to buy ?

NOTE: TOUR IS ONLY IN JAPANESE. Book in advance(months).... like way In advance if you want to do the factory tour. Even the museum should be booked at least 2 weeks in advanced. When I went they were over sold on there Staples so they were only selling small batch bottles limited to 1 per person. The tasting is cheap and good.

Great experience for whisky lovers and those with a passing interest. Try and do the production tour and check out the available rare whiskies at the tasting bar. There are 2 options - a tour of the production facilities (costs 1k Yen but is incredible value) and access to the whisky museum (free). Both require booking in advance via the website. The production tour is very interesting even if you're not a passionate whisky drinker and only takes about 80mins. The smell of the production rooms is incredible and there's a range of audio guides (need to download the app as per the Suntory website). The tour ends with a small (4) tasting of some base whiskys and the final blend which is fun. The whisky museum isn't huge (probably 20 mins) and is interesting but a bit repetitive and not all images have English translations. There is also a tasting bar available with individual whisky's and flights for after the tour or museum trip. They have rare whiskys like Hibiki 30 years and Hakushu 25 years available 1 per customer.

Great distillery, a must see for whisky enthusiasts. I can highly recommend going here. The tasting bar is superb.

Honestly, this is a very very cool distillery to check out and it has plenty of history behind it. The only one thing that kind of sucked for us was that due to maintenance, the distillery tour was closed to us even though we had called in advance and were told we could come for the tour by just walking in without a reservation(yeah that kind of sucked). On a brighter note, at the very least, we had the chance to go and check out their museum and whiskey tasting. You do have to pay for the tastings of whiskey but after having tried three of the more popular whiskeys, I walked out only having spent 1400 yen(so not too bad). Hopefully the next time we come back we really hope we’ll get the chance to do the tour. I would still recommend this place though, even if just for the museum.

Once in a lifetime experience, visiting this legendary distillery, going into the cellar and taking deep breath to let the cask aroma struck into your nose - sublime. What makes everything different - like, everything: their water source.

I would have liked to do a guided tour, but they were booked out quite far in advance, so I'd highly recommend locking in a date as early as possible. You can still reserve a place to do a short, self-guided tour and then move through to the tasting room. This was plenty of fun in itself reading about the history of Yamazaki and Suntory along the way. The tasting room is amazing, with an excellent selection of spirits (a number of which are only aged in alternative barrels in-house, and so are exclusive to the distillery tasting room only!). The prices for tasting are more than reasonable, and it's a casual environment where you can speak with others doing their own tastings. The only let down at the distillery is the product range that you can buy from the store/gift shop. Because Yamazaki is so popular, there is hardly any available, and only a very small selection of Japanese spirits. There are almost more American Whiskies from the Suntory range than there are Japanese for sale. However there's some great branded glassware and other accessories, so you just have to keep an eye out for the whiskies you want elsewhere. Still a great couple of hours, and would definitely look to do this again if I have the chance to return to Japan. It should be on any whisky drinkers list of 'things to do'.
