中	中村中 on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 明治7(1874)年9月1日開園。面積67911㎡は都立霊園では最小。巣鴨門入口に北豊島郡巣鴨町だった頃の人孔(ﾏﾝﾎｰﾙ)が残されている。園内の外人墓地近くにも1基あるが保存状態は芳しくない。巣鴨町内の下水道敷設に伴って人孔を設置したので昭和5(1930)年前後の物と推察でき、たいへん貴重な人孔である。明治22(1889)年4月の町村制施行により巣鴨町が発足。昭和7(1932)年10月に北豐島郡髙田町、西巢鴨町、長崎町とともに東京市に編入され豊島区になるまで存在した自治体である。播磨國(播州)林田藩(現姫路市の一部)藩邸の建部(たけべ)邸跡地を東京府の管理下のもと染井墓地と名付けて公共墓地として開園した。昭和10(1935)年5月に染井霊園と改称した。?の季節にはソメイヨシノが咲き誇り美しい。元々この界隈はソメイヨシノ発祥の地である。 Opened on September 1, 1874. The name was changed to Somei Cemetery in May 1935. In the season of ?, Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom and beautiful. Originally, this neighborhood was the birthplace of Yoshino cherry tree.

I was interested to find a foreigner Gaijin section also, obviously with tomb-body style burial, not current cremation. A missionary Rev. G.E. Woodhall, a Scottish man from Glasgow who succombed to cholera in 1886, and an “Oriental Nightengale” was the only grave with a special recent post and flowers. Not sure of this person or story.
