御祭神は速玉男命・菅原道真公。推古天皇24（616）年，紀伊国熊野大神の分霊を迎え（社名の元は熊野山三社の新宮でしょうか？），翌年社殿竣工。境内社の稲荷神社の由来碑を見ると，元々は当地には地主神として稲荷神社があったが，宝暦3（1753）年に現在地に新宮神社が遷宮され，稲荷社が境内社とされたようです。鹿島臨海鉄道の下をくぐった狭い道路を進み・・・この辺りは森と農地と少々の民家。風景を見ていると，なんとなく県北地域の風貌があると思いましたが，左手に車数台分の駐車場と横長の特徴的な鳥居が現れます。高台の鎮守の森の中，石段を登ると境内へ到着。当社社殿のほか，稲荷神社と愛宕神社の大きな社殿も鎮座され，石碑・石塔・石祠など立ち並び，そうですね，どこか不思議な感じの・・・古い，古くからの鎮守として人々から尊崇されてこられたことが，肌で感じられる御神域です。
