★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Shinchaya is located just across the border separating Gifu and Nagano prefectures. It was originally one of the “tateba”, or tea rest-houses, created as a resting place between post-towns. Today it still has two small tea houses, one dating back well over a hundred years.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely ryokan called the Shinachaya (means New Tea House) run by Mr and Mrs Hara. The food is excellent and includes wild boar hunted by Mr Hara who is one of the top local hunters. Very comfortable, on the Nakasendo Trail and highly recommended. Try Mrs Hara's Umeshu (plum/apricot wine).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had a great stay here. The inn is magnificent in terms of it's historic design and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Yukatas are provided so that you can wear them while in the inn (it's really regret not having to worry about what you're going to wear for dinner). The baths are shared and they can accommodate 2 at a time but it's wonderful to soak in the hot tub after a long day of hiking. Especially in autumn or winter. Dinner was delicious!! There were so many dishes I hardly knew where to start
