神	神山博光 on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 下というのがこの駅のイメージを悪くしている気がする。東上線は大正3年に池袋～川越(六軒町)で開業したとされているが、当時は下板橋～池袋は本線とは別の支線だったそうで、東上線開業時の本当の始発駅は下板橋駅だったんです。現在地より200メートルほど大山駅寄りにあったそうで、そこの住所が北豊島郡下板橋村だったそうだ。(ちなみに、板橋宿というのも正しくは下板橋宿というそうだ)　どうしても上下という字がつくと上を正しいものと見てしまうが、開業時の計画では下板橋駅の次は成増駅だったそうで、それだと間が開きすぎることから追加されたのが上板橋駅で、この上という字は北という意味で付けたらしい。というのも、その当時に上板橋村は別に存在していたからで、現在の中板橋駅南口の弥生町が上板橋村だったんです。これについては、弥生町に川越街道第一宿の上板橋宿があったという記録があるので間違いありません。 I feel that the image below is deteriorating.
