A must see if you get to Akita. They light it up very nicely in the evening.

22-Feb, was raining, pretty much nothing to see at this period, construction going on, ponds nearby is empty as it is winter. Came here to see the Geisha. Am sure it is a better/beautiful park at another day/season?

Senshu Park is the best place to go during cherry blossom season in Akita There are special events and food stalls you can visit for some local, faire and even foreign food Outside of cherry blossom season, Senshu Park is a great place to go and have a relaxing time having a walk, or you might just want to come here with you friends

There are two museums taking us through a tour of the history of Akita. The entrance fee is a mere 100 yen. There are beautiful parks which are spacious with numerous trees. There is a pond with beautiful creepers. Autumn colours are a silver lining. There is also a children’s park. Restrooms are available. There is a small store for drinks and snacks. One of the museums has an observation tower. Though only 2 storeys tall, the view of the city is beautiful. The park is walkable from the Akita station, 10-15 minutes. The art museum is opposite to the entrance of this park.

Parks I usually give it a miss but with not much planned we headed up the hill to have a wander. Crossing the road from our dormy Inn hotel we then crossed the bridge where we met an old lady selling ice cream but not any old ice cream. She ingeniously shapes it into a rose with a mix of vanilla and rose flavoured ice. For the 200 yen and a really nice smile it made our day. Going up the hill you come to a small cafe that sell really nice matcha . Going further up to come to a small pond and shrine with colourful shrubbery. Going even further up there is a small waterfall and a keep with a good view over Akita. With nice weather it was a nice leisurely stroll that gives you a real sense of tranquility.

It's not the best place to visit in the middle of summer but since I'm only in Akita to catch the Kanto Matsuri, this seems like a good place to explore within minutes from the train station. Of course, I was made to regret my decision because the weather was scorching and as I made my way to the park, I was greeted by the insane screeching of cicadas. I was told this would be a beautiful place for cherry blossom viewing in spring (and I have no doubts about that). But maybe in summer, it's more advisable to give this park a miss. Not even the sight of the Osumiyagura turret / guard post is of any consolation... And the lotus littered moat? Let's just say it kind of looks like a total mess...
