駒形神社は、第十二代景行天皇四十年、日本武尊東夷征討の折、当地駒ケ嶽山頂に国土安寧と民心安定を祈念し奥州鎮護の神として勧請し給うとあり、創祀は大古に属するも東夷平定の業漸く進んでこの地方に鎮守府が置かれし頃より神威中央に及び、文徳天皇仁寿元年（８５１）九月には正五位下を加えられ、清和天皇の貞観四年（８６２）六月従四位下に昇り、延喜の制に列せられた東北地方における第一の名社である。
当社里宮については、奥羽観蹟聞考誌によれば、奥宮の鎮座地は高山険阻にて初冬より雪積りて、翌年暮春まで参道を埋め、殊に女人禁制の霊山なれば老少婦人の参詣心にまかせず、よって里人山麓に一社を建て拝するため奉斎とある。
終戦前は国幣小社駒形神社境外末社として祭祀が執行されていた。
