旧道は緩やかな斜度で、車はほとんどこちらに来ないので、自転車での走行はとても走りやすい。ただ路面が荒れているところもあるので、スピードの出し過ぎには注意。

一躍有名になってしまった笹子トンネル。それは中央道(高速道路)で有名ですが、甲州街道の旧道に笹子峠の笹子隧道があります。国の登録有形文化財に指定されています。 昭和13年3月に開通し、山に囲まれた甲州(山梨県)に通じる車道となったそうで、周辺の環境や山並みを見るといかに笹子峠超えが難所であったかが判ります。 崩れやすそうな斜面や、真横と思えるような木々の生え方などトンネルができたあとも未舗装路だったようで、ヘアピンの続く狭路は当時の乗り物には厳しいものだったと思われます。 今は舗装こそされていますが峠までの道は狭く、枝や石などが多く落ちており注意が必要です。 バイクの場合特にコケや砂ジャリなども多く、そういう道に慣れていない方にはオススメしません。 特に眺望ポイントもなく、これが今でもあまり使われていない原因かもしれません。 途中、大月方面からだと「矢立の杉」という樹齢千年を超すと言われる巨木があります。(少し歩きます。) 駐車スペースが、車二台分ほどなのでご注意を!
The Sasako tunnel has become famous. It is famous for the Chuo Expressway, but the Sasago Tunnel on the Sasago Pass is on the old road of the Koshu Highway. It is designated as a national registered tangible cultural property. It was opened in March 1938 and became a road leading to Koshu (Yamanashi Prefecture) surrounded by mountains. Looking at the surrounding environment and mountains, you can see how difficult it was to cross the Sasako Pass. It seems that the road was unpaved even after the tunnel was built, such as the slopes that are likely to collapse and the way trees grow that seem to be right next to it, and the narrow road with hairpins seems to have been difficult for vehicles at that time. It is paved now, but the road to the pass is narrow and many branches and stones have fallen, so be careful. In the case of a motorcycle, there are many moss and sand jerseys, so it is not recommended for those who are not accustomed to such roads. There is no particular view point, which may be the reason why it is still not used much. Along the way, there is a giant tree called "Yatate no Sugi" that is said to be over 1000 years old from the direction of Otsuki. (Walk a little.) Please note that the parking space is about two cars!

1990年12月に自転車で大月側から越えました。笹子隧道坑口の標高は約1050mです。甲府側はコンクリむきだしですが、大月側は壁面に煉瓦が積まれていて趣があります。開通が1938年(昭13)年なのでトンネル本体は煉瓦造ではなくコンクリートです。狭いトンネルですが、内壁を補強したようで、開削当初よりも更に狭くなっています。現在の写真を見ると断面形状は馬蹄形ですが、昔はもっと円形に近い形をしていました。
In December 1990, I crossed from the Otsuki side by bicycle. The altitude of the Choshi Tunnel is about 1050m. The Kofu side is concreting, but the Otsuki side has brick walls on the wall. Since the opening was in 1938 (Showa 13), the tunnel body is not brick but concrete. Although it is a narrow tunnel, it seems to have reinforced the inner wall, which is even narrower than the beginning of excavation. Looking at the current picture, the cross-sectional shape is a horseshoe shape, but in the past it was more circular.

2020年6月の日曜に訪問。甲府側から曲がりくねった山道を登っていきましたが、とてつもなく険しい、と言うこともなく、トンネル入り口に到着。少しひらけた場所があり、普通車が数台は停められそうですが、周りに何もなく、トンネル付近では見晴らしが良いわけでもないため、あまり人気はない様子です。田舎すぎるのか、ローリング族?らしきブレーキ痕も見当たりませんでした。トンネルは灯りが1つもなく、遠くに反対側の出口がポツンと見えるだけ。あたりには民家も何もなく、携帯も圏外なので、かなり不安になります。
Visited on Sunday, June 2020. I climbed the winding mountain road from Kofu side, but arrived at the entrance of the tunnel without saying that it was extremely rugged. 現在の笹子トンネルができるまで、甲州街道の難所の一つだったそうです。抗口がお洒落になってますし、道中の橋も補修されている様子で、大事にされているのを感じました。 くねくね道ですが、物凄くハードな道のりでもないので、時間に余裕がある時はこの峠でドライブもいいかもしれません。
It was one of the difficult points on the Koshu Highway until the current Sasago Tunnel was built. The Hang Hau is fashionable, and the bridge along the way seems to be being repaired, so I felt that it was being taken care of. It's a winding road, but it's not a very hard road, so if you have time, you may want to drive at this pass.

冬期は通行止めになります。2021年は4月16日の夕方に解除さらました。矢立の杉までは冬でも行けます。笹子雁ヶ腹摺山は冬でも20号線の笹子トンネル大月側、矢立の杉の方へ入ってすぐの所に登山口ありますので登れますが、笹子峠の登山口に比べてかなり距離延びます。

自転車で交通量の多い国道20号線の新笹子トンネルを避けて、よく旧道越えをしています。その時の目標になるのがこの笹子隧道。レンガで作られたトンネルの入り口に歴史を感じ、当時、このトンネルがいかに重要な存在だったのかを感じる。トンネルに着いた時の安堵感と達成感が最高!
