★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 明治4年（1871）下野国は廃藩置県のあと栃木県と宇都宮県に分かれ、次いで明治6年栃木県は宇都宮県を合併し、この地に栃木県庁が置かれたことで、栃木町は政治・経済・文化の中心として盛えました。
県庁堀は、県庁の敷地に東西約246m、南北約315mの方形にめぐらせた幅約6mの堀と、堀と巴波川を繋ぐ堀（漕渠）で形作られ、敷地内には舟運による荷揚げ場が設けられました。
その後、明治17年に県庁は宇都宮に移りましたが、県名は栃木県としてそのまま残りました。

In 1871, Shimotsuke Province was divided into Tochigi Prefecture and Utsunomiya Prefecture after the abolition of the feudal clan, and then Tochigi Prefecture merged with Utsunomiya Prefecture in 1871. It flourished as the center of economy and culture.
The prefectural office moat is formed on the site of the prefectural office by a moat with a width of about 6 m, which is about 246 m east-west and about 315 m north-south, and a moat (ditch) that connects the moat and the Uzuma River. A place was set up.
After that, the prefectural office moved to Utsunomiya in 1897, but the prefecture name remained as Tochigi prefecture.

旧県庁跡地唯一の遺構です。
廃藩置県ににより下野国は栃木県と宇都宮県にわかれ、明治6年に再び栃木県として統合された際に下野国を一つの県とする栃木県庁の所在地となりました。
当時の県庁の周囲には約1キロメートルに及ぶ堀を巡らしました。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 栃木町役場として、大正１０年（１９２１年）に建てられた庁舎だそう。１階は事務所と食堂。２階は議場と貴賓室があったそうです。国の有形文化財になっています。
The Tochigi Town Hall is said to be a government building built in 1921. The first floor is the office and dining room. It seems that there was a meeting place and a guest room on the second floor. It is a national tangible cultural property.
