this restaurant is not situated around the touristy spots, but well worth going out of your way for. As other reviewers have mentioned, the owner is an incredibly friendly guy and the food is both unique an awesome. I had an amazing experience here.

It's a little outside the center of town, but this is a can't-miss stop for the meat eater in Kyoto. Delicious wild game and other tasty izakaya fare at very reasonable prices. Don't miss out on the smoked duck loin. Be warned that the proprietor may test you with a free gift of spicy fried crickets!

I just waited 4 years to drink their "killer bees sake" again. Do I really need to add more? Btw the pork skewers and smoked duck are divine. But please, try some grasshoppers with killer Bee sake. You may need a reservation if more than 4...

God this was fantastic food and what a lovely owner! I ordered the grilled wild boar, grilled riceballs (interesting and nice!) and a vegetable side dish, along with some plum wine. It was all absolutely amazing - I still dream of that boar! The owner was lovely too - he gave me an extra side dish which had a mix of various things on it. He also noticed i’d been rubbing my hands as I was cold so gave me a bunch of disposable hand warmers! What a lovely guy. I recommend this place to everyone I meet who goes to Kyoto. I want to go back!

This was my favorite food experience in Kyoto! The gentleman who runs the place is so kind and helpful. The food is, I believe, more traditional Nagano-style grilled dishes as well as vegetables. The surprise for me was the horse sashimi (which I loved) and my other favorite was the miso paste vegetable mix on a magnolia leaf. It was placed on top of charcoal, and then after it started to bubble we mixed it with rice. Wow, what a meal. A bit out of the way, but so worth it in my opinion.

Delicious! I got the Inobuta chunk bbq, which was juicy, tender, and full of flavor! The owner is a friendly older man who can speak decent English (and there is an English menu). We chatted for a while after I ate, he had sat down near me and had tea with me as we talked. One of the best experiences in Japan yet!

Excellent, excellent food and gracious host! You absolutely have to eat the charcoal grilled wild boar, succulent and juicy!! Wasabi leaves, which looked unassuming but packs a punch! And the hoba yaki! In addition to the wonderful food, the owner was super gracious and hospitable! He even gave us some plum dessert wine after the meal! You absolutely have to try this place in Kyoto!

A bit out of the way from the main area, however, a visit to Okariba is a must! It was one of the highlights of our trip. The charcoal grilled wild boar and duck was a highlight - very tasty. If you're daring enough, try the grasshoppers and bee larvae (and for the very brave - the horse sashimi, yes, you read that correctly). The restaurant has a very homey, relaxed vibe. Hospitality by the owner was excellent, he makes you feel so welcomed. He is also extremely generous, so don't be surprised if you gives you a few dishes on the house. Will definitely return if I come back to Kyoto. Tips: Best to make a reservation (via 'Gurunavi') beforehand as we witnessed him turn back a few walk-ins. Whilst the restaurant is on the main road, it isn't very obvious (sign is handwritten) so I would recommend searching the restaurant via Google Map Street View before you go so you know what it looks like
