2019年6月1日現在、本堂 の 周辺は改装中でした。
こちらに 問題があるわけではありませんが、高得点を付けて 観光寺院と間違って 来られる方がいると 申し訳ないので、あえて低評価にしています。

このお寺の門前に、石造の大きな一休さんが道を挟んでお寺の門の方を見て建っていますが、これは奈良では有名な石材屋さんのものらしく、一休さんの後ろには石材屋さんの名前の看板が建っていました。

天平17（745）年に行基僧正によって開山。念仏寺と称す。
寺の東側墓地の中腹に「行基大菩薩」の石碑がある。
その後、道源法師にお寺が引き継がれたが、行基が現在の場所にお寺を移すべし、という内容の夢を見たため、現在の場所にご本尊を移し、ここを「大塚」とした。
このことからこのお寺を「大塚念佛寺」とした。
戦国時代、明應7（1498）年に地震に遭い、本堂が焼失。
天文11（1542）年、十市兵遠忠と言う人物が本堂を再建。
江戸時代の寛永6（1629）年、本堂が全焼。
寛永10（1633）年、円誉上人と村に人々の力により本堂を再建。
承慶元（1652）年、常誉上人によって浄土宗へと改宗。
現在に至る。
