御館の乱の際、蘆名氏が越後での勢力拡大を狙って景虎方の援軍として侵略し越後での作戦拠点にしようと攻略を狙った城
それを防いだのが五十公野治長
主力部隊が景勝方の援軍として春日山城に向かい不在にも関わらず見事撃退し蘆名氏の越後での勢力拡大を頓挫させた
この五十公野治長が後に新発田重家と名乗り景勝に反旗を翻し蘆名氏と手を結び10年近く景勝を苦しめることになるとは真に戦国時代は何があるかわからない
