個人的には千里線および吹田市で山田の次に好きな駅です(住みたいという意味で)。 千里線の中では最も発展著しい駅ではないでしょうか。 昔は新千里駅という名前だったらしいです。 近くの千里南公園はお洒落なカフェレストランが出来たり、かなり良いエリアになっています。周辺は新築マンションだらけです。 高野台などの戸建てエリアはかなりの高級住宅街です。 駅前にトナリエ南千里という商業施設があり、スーパーや飲食店、ドラッグストア、郵便局、ATM、開業医院など日常生活に必要な施設は全て揃っています。 南千里クリスタルホテルというホテルもあります。 吹田市の関連施設もあるので便利そうです。 不動産価格も上昇傾向にあるエリアで、転勤族にも通勤利便性と平和な環境から、かなりの人気エリアです。 ※北大阪急行(御堂筋線直通)桃山台駅へも、15分あれば歩いて行けます。 電車は天六以降、大阪メトロ堺筋線に乗入れており、南森町、北浜、堺筋本町、長堀橋、日本橋といった主要駅へ1本で行けますし、梅田行きも2本に1本ほど出ているのでかなり便利です。 各停なので遅いことや朝は座れないこと、淡路での信号待ちが発生する、汚い団地があるのがデメリットですが、それ以外は非常に便利で住環境の良い駅だといえます。

昭和38年(1963年)千里山駅から千里山線延伸開通と同時に「新千里山」駅として開業。現在の淡路方面行きホームに2線構造で運転された。現在、1線は線路と渡り線が撤去され線路があったスペースだけがホーム横に残る。また、現在は埋められたが、ホーム中央付近に階段があり、現在は薬局となっている駅下の1階が改札口となっていた。昭和42年(1967年)に北千里駅まで延伸時に北千里方面行きホームが設置され、延伸開通と同時に路線名は千里線、駅名は南千里に改称した。万国博覧会が開催された昭和45年(1970年)輸送力増強のため、千里線の車両の増結が行われ、駅施設のホームが延長された。また改札口も現在位置の2階に移設され、駅真下にあった改札口は閉鎖された。 駅前は再開発がなされ、開業当初の個人商店が多く集まる商業施設から大きく変化した。 路線バスが発着しタクシーも常駐する便利な駅。

千里ニュータウン団地群沿いにある阪急線の駅です。 改札・エレベーター・エスカレーター・階段・トイレは北側(北千里側)にしかありません。 公共複合施設「千里ニュータウンプラザ」商業施設「トナリエ南千里」と隣接している為便利です。 北へ少し歩くと千里南公園もあります。 なお、駅を横切る135号線を西に15分程歩くと北大阪急行(地下鉄御堂筋線)「桃山台駅」があります。 千里線全駅共通ですが南方面は大阪梅田行きと地下鉄堺筋線行きが混在してる為、淡路以降へ行く方は注意が必要です。 (2021/09/19現在) 駅の西側の空き地ですが、消防庁舎建設工事中です。
