★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not sure if there was a translation or cultural issue but walked in at 8 pm and was told no room—not “come back later” or “no English menus”. Just shook their heads no at our party of 2. There was only 12 seats around the open kitchen. There was seating upstairs but we were not allowed beyond the first floor.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Don't come here if you don't speak Japanese, you will be turned away at the door.
I came here with my fiancee and the Japanese couple that entered before us were greeted well. They then asked us how many people were in our party and I responded 'two people' in Japanese. At this point they were still friendly.
However I asked if they could speak English as I could not follow what they were saying in Japanese. They then said that they were full and the wait would be 2 hours (which is clearly unrealistic and a lie).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Low-key kushikatsu skewers eatery in a small ally way in Shinsaibashi.
Although kushikatsu is known for its oily and flavorful taste, Karatto's kushikatsu is one of a kind with its very light, deep fry batter which makes it easy for women and even children to eat.
They have Asahi on tap and also the Extra Cold options as well. Very good selection of wine too.
Their tapas is surprisingly Western and also very good for its price.
I personally recommend the quail eggs, mozzarella cheese, shishito (green peppers), and the scallops for the skewers.
Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time since it does get busy with the locals even in weekdays.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Kushikatsu restaurant in an alley within Shinsaibashi that has a decent selection of wine and sake. The kushiage menu ranges from traditional to fusion flavors such as avocado with condensed milk. Everything was great as the fried batter was light and the dipping sauce was flavorful without it being heavy. Shinsaibashi Karatto also has a more western menu of appetizers and main dishes as well.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A quiet, wholesome drinking spot. The staff were helpful given our lack of Japanese, and served us promptly, and kindly. The kushikatsu was delicious, the crab especially!! The avocado with condensed milk is excellent, sweet, salty, and treats your soul. Please give them a visit

Had a chance to dine at Karatto a few years back, the restaurant is the proverbial hole in a wall establishment since it is located in a narrow side street opposite the south side of the UNIQLO clothing retail store.
The interior is actually a traditional Japanese kushikatsu establishment with countertop seating facing the cooking area, there are tables available as well.
When the store is not busy, there is usually a store staff member present by the main street calling for customers to come and visit the establishment.
