御祭神は速玉男命。文禄3（1594）年，紀州熊野本社から御分霊を奉遷。国道51号線とほぼ平行する東側の狭い路地東の森に鳥居が一基建っていますが，その前には鉄鎖が張られています。むむ，これは！・・・と深くは考えずに脇から入って，鳥居の先の森へ，草むらの参道をテクテク歩き出しました。参道には車の轍の跡があり，鎮守の杜は想像していたのよりもかなり深い森が続きます。やがて緩やかな登り坂の向こうに倉庫のような建物が小さく見えてきました。何でしょうか・・・いや，白い壁に大きく「熊野神社」と。参道をまっすぐ進むと，その倉庫の（社名が書いてあった）横っ腹に到着します。草むらの広場の真ん中にぽつんと建っていたその倉庫のような建物こそが社殿，いや正確には中に祠が鎮座される覆屋でした。何とも不思議な心持ちがして，辺りを見渡します。茨城県神社誌によれば，当社は2,700坪もの敷地を有する大社。鹿島灘に近いのに海の雰囲気はなく，山でもないのに山の雰囲気がある，この不思議な境内を。
