★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 1882年、講道館柔道創始者の嘉納治五郎は、この場所で稽古を始めました。
嘉納治五郎は「日本五輪の父」とも呼ばれています。
これは、彼がアジア国初のIOC委員を務めたこと、そして、オリンピックの国内招致を実現するために尽力したためです。
実際、1940年には、東京オリンピックが開催されるはずでした。
その手筈が整っていくまさに1938年、嘉納治五郎は亡くなりました。
エジプトで開催されたIOC総会からの帰路、日本に向かっていた氷川丸の中で、肺炎で亡くなりました。
最期までオリンピックに命を懸けた77年の生涯でした。
しかし、嘉納治五郎のオリンピックに懸けた想いは、日中戦争の激化により、24年後の1964年まで延びることとなりました。
来年のオリンピックでは、日本国内だけでなく、世界中の柔道ファン、そしてオリンピックファンがここに訪れるでしょう。
境内には「講道館柔道発祥之地」と刻まれた石碑が置かれています。
この石碑は、嘉納治五郎の没後30年を記念して、1968年に置かれたものです。

In the precincts, there is a stone monument engraved with “Kodokan Judo Shonochi”.
This monument was placed in 1968 to commemorate the 30 years since the death of Jigoro Kano.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 稲荷町の人気銭湯「寿湯」へ行く時にいつも通る道にある地味な寺院。何気なく中に入ると「講道館柔道発祥の地」と書かれた石碑が建っていた。
1882 (明治１５年) 講道館柔道の創始者「嘉納治五郎」が１２畳の広さの書院で友人や門弟９名と共に稽古を始めた場所が稲荷町の「永昌寺」だったと石碑に書かれている。
後で気が付いたのは、浅草通り側にある交番に守られるように交番の裏側に山門があった。
