高台にあって風光明媚、阿蘇海を眼下に見下ろせる。
寺裏にある枯山水庭園は江戸時代に築かれ、京都府の名勝庭園に指定されている。
また、与謝蕪村の風竹屏風(京都府指定文化財)、十六羅漢図(宮津市指定文化財)、地蔵菩薩二童子像(宮津市指定文化財)など、寺宝が多い。
明治時代に住職の夢に阿弥陀如来が現れ「裏山に埋まっているから掘り出してくれ」と言ったため掘ったところ、本当に阿弥陀如来像が現れたという奇瑞もあったとか。
このお寺の創建は平安時代初期の平城天皇が愛宕権現の本地仏である将軍地蔵を祀ったことが始まり。その愛宕神は今も寺の裏山の大師山に愛宕神社として存在し、大師山には四国八十八ヶ所霊場の「うつし」の弘法大師の石像が巡拝コースに沿って祀られている。

The dry landscape garden behind the temple was built in the Edo period and is designated as a scenic garden in Kyoto Prefecture.
In addition, there are many temple treasures such as the wind bamboo wind (Kyoto Prefecture designated cultural property), the Sixteen Arhats (Miyazu City designated cultural property), and the Jizo Bosatsu Nidoji statue (Miyazu City designated cultural property).
In the Meiji era, Amida Nyorai appeared in the dream of a priest and said, "Because it is buried in the back mountain, please dig it out."
The temple was founded when Emperor Heizei in the early Heian period worshiped Shogun Jizo, the home Buddha of Atago Gongen. The Atago god still exists as Atago Shrine on Mt. Daishi in the back mountain of the temple, and a stone statue of Kobo Daishi of "Utsushi" at the 88 temples of Shikoku is enshrined along the pilgrimage course on Mt. Daishi.
