I have read several reviews on how foreigners are unwelcome. Sadly I have to agree. You can sense the difference in the owners' attitude when serving locals and foreigners. I also felt very uncomfortable that the owner kept staring at me.

Food was exquisite. We ordered duck soba. A magic experience and authentic atmosphere. No matter if the staff spoke hardly any English. This is many years ago, but I still dream of returning.

Terribly disappointing, how did this restaurant get a Michelin star? Firstly, the food was of above average quality only. While the duck soup was decent, it wasn't Michelin level cooking and I've had better soba noodles elsewhere. As for the service, the other comments about the restaurant's hostility towards foreigners are absolutely true. Expect the owner to be aggressive and the waitresses to be slow. They will also deny you from re-ordering a second bowl of soba as you watch the local Japanese guests order multiple bowls. While the food was lacklustre, the service completely destroyed the experience. Please avoid this place at all costs.

A unique experience to try traditional, delicious soba for those who have patience to adapt to the rules of the house. I am no soba expert but my meal of duck soba was exquisite. An elderly couple runs the restaurant and their space and capacity only allow them to seat a limited number of people. I went on Sunday when there was a line at opening and couldn’t get in right away and so I returned on Tuesday at 11:30am and was seated immediately and there were only two other people eating. The chefs were very nice. The place doesn’t cater to tourists but that is what makes for a rare and special experience. The menu is in Japanese so I would learn how to say what type of soba you want to order or to bring a friend who can translate. Definitely worth the effort for the atmosphere, details, and taste.

This place is a real treat! We arrived five minutes before opening and were seated right away on tatami mats in a small but spacious room looking onto a mossy garden with a gorgeous Japanese maple and a goldfish bowl. The person who took our order was very nice, and seemed pleased with my technique of using Google image search to order what I wanted (my kanji is limited to the say least!). Each part of our meal revolved around soba (buckwheat). We were offered a small basket of fried soba crisps - delightful and subtle - along with roasted buckwheat tea. Our order of soba tofu was a delight - soft texture and a sweet taste. I ordered coarse soba with wasabi, which came whole with a shark skin grater so you can grate the amount you need. Fresh wasabi is a special treat! My dad had the soba with duck soup, which had a rich and delicate flavour and was filled with lots of a type of onion. Yum! After we finished eating the noodles we were given a hot tea pot of soba boiling water to dilute my dashi stock and my dad's soup into slightly thickened broths. So special!! Definitely go here!

Okay, the soba was really very good, the texture was amazing. But the rest of the experience was below average. Seated right next to the open door on a busy road, and there was a strange "not welcome" vibe from the owner. There are much nicer soba restaurants in Kyoto. Honke Owariya is far better.

Soba’s taste was 4.5 out of 5 but little overpriced i think.. But pudding was 1.5 out of 5.

I don't know if the owner likes foreigners or not. But this restaurant gave me a very good experience. I never felt particularly uncomfortable with the service. If you don't like this unique atmosphere of the space, don't come here. I will continue to attend this restaurant for its good atmosphere. Kanai's Soba has a gentle aroma and taste, and is never peculiar. Many people, including Japanese, misunderstand the taste of Soba. Many people prefer the taste of noodle soup. Soba lovers prefer the flavor characteristics of soba. Aroma, throat clearing, and space are some of the characteristics that make Soba tasty. Soba is a complex Japanese culture. Japanese deliciousness is not only about taste, and good Japanese service is not only about behavior. The owner's passion for Soba and hospitality create a space.... If you do not share this culture, there is no need to come here.
