御祭神は別雷命。御由緒は江戸時代の創建であるというくらいしか分かりません。新旧の国道355号の間、園部川東側を南北に走る道路から森の中に消えていく砂利道へ折れると、すぐに左手に石鳥居。深々とした鎮守の杜に囲まれた参道を進めば、途中の右手に境内社である稲荷神社が。真っ直ぐ先の短い階段を上った先に大変重厚な面持ちの立派な社殿が鎮座していらっしゃいました。拝殿扁額には「雷大明神」とあり、ゼンリン地図には当社を「雷神社」を記していますが、茨城県神社誌には金谷神社と。「金谷」は古い地区名から付けられたのでしょう。この辺りで鉄の採掘か加工が行われていたのが地名の由来と考えられています。
