"Mamiya Rinzō" was a large explorer and surveyor born in Ibaraki prefecture more than 200 years ago. Traversing the extremely difficult Ezo area, surveying the coast, and then discovering the Strait of Tartary. In the museum, materials and footprints that remain in the history of the great life and posterity are displayed in an easy-to-understand manner along with the historical background. In addition, the relocated birthplace is a must-see value as a valuable cultural property that vividly conveys the lives of people at that time.

No, Mr. Rinzō Mamiya has the physical strength and good legs that he doesn't have. Looking at the detailed map that he explored and created on display, it started from the entire circumference of Hokkaido and the inland area, to the northern islands such as Etorofu and Kunashiri Island, and even to a part of the continent of Sakhalin and the opposite bank. I was amazed at the vast range of activities. I cannot help but be afraid of his tremendous passion and inquisitiveness for his northern expedition. At that time, there were no cars, trains, or power boats, so of course everything was human-powered. I mean, the problem before that was that there were no maps or roads in the first place (laughs). You don't even know how long it will take and you will need food. Therefore, in the special temple near the memorial hall, which Hayashizo took care of when he was a boy, there is a "living tomb" that he built before the first Sakhalin expedition. You started with a tragic determination that you might never come back here again. It's about a 5-minute walk from the memorial hall, so be sure to check it out. The memorial hall also has the birthplace of Hayashizo, which has been relocated and preserved. It's a poor little thing, and the unusually low eaves are impressive. Is it a device to overcome the cold wind blowing from the direction of Mt. Tsukuba? Even now, there was nothing blocking the mountain, and it seemed to be cold. Even so, the education and human resources promotion system of the Edo period, which allows you to receive basic education even if you are not from a wealthy region in such a region and can be utilized centrally if you have the spirit and ability, is quite stupid. It's not. That may be the reason why the Meiji Restoration went well.

An explorer who explored and surveyed Hokkaido and Sakhalin during the Edo period? It is a great man whose name remains as the Strait of Tartary. The ruins of the birthplace are reproduced and there is a memorial hall nearby, where the background and achievements of Hayashizo are explained.

October 2021 Admission is 100 yen for adults Since the memorial hall is small, it focuses on the achievements of the Strait of Tartary rather than the life of Rinzō Mamiya. It was good point The results of the survey are displayed on a raw scale, and you can see how great and difficult it is. The point that was not good I wish I could have told you a little more about the surveying technique and the situation at that time. I think there are many people who wonder, "I found out that he was a very amazing person, but how did he take the Ainu people to the survey in the cold weather?" There is a birthplace (restoration) outside the building. Isn't it fine for a house at that time? Moreover, it seems that the real thing was wider.

Admission fee is 100 yen. If you look closely, it's about an hour ? The birthplace also had the atmosphere of that time. It's a little far away, but I think it's interesting to see the Ino Tadataka Memorial Hall together.

This memorial hall was built as one of the awards projects to introduce "Mamiya Rinzou", a large explorer and surveyor who was born and raised in this area in the latter half of the 18th century and went out to Edo and was active in the north. It was opened on June 3, 1993 (Survey Day). The exhibits in the museum are composed of things related to Mamiya Rinzō and the background of his life, and introduce them in line with the times. In addition to the few materials collected from all over the country, the exhibits are based on themes, including relics from the current descendants' homes and historic sites related to Hayashizo.
The admission fee is 100 yen, but I think it is a memorial hall with highlights such as Mamiya Rinzō's life, instruments used for surveying, Sakhalin's large-format map, and valuable literature at that time. I went there at noon on a holiday, but it was very nice to be able to see the exhibits slowly in a chartered state. There are many statues of Mamiya Rinzō, including the representative statue of Cape Soya, but I didn't have a chance to know his achievements and life, so visiting the memorial hall was a good opportunity.
