Very good fusion food. Note, it is not a purely indian restaurant. It is fusion between indian, thai curry. There is no naan served here. Various option of Curries with rice are available.

Nice buttered chicken curry. Would probably go back here for their keema curry.

One of the best Indian restaurants in Kyoto according to Trip Adviser, I would advise you to question whatever excuse for logic was used behind that assessment. Kamal is not a bad restaurant per se. It serves curry... kind of. Don't let the elephant decor lull you into a false sense of culinary security because if you are looking for authentic or at least semi-authentic Indian curry, you will more than likely be heartbroken and feel betrayed by your other senses. My fiance and I had plans to try another Indian restaurant in the area, but they were packed and we did not want to wait for a table to become available (we probably should have). So, we ended up using Google Maps to locate another place. It suggested Kamal. We proceeded to head to the location and the closer we got, the wonderful scent of spices and food hit us. We had high hopes but our hopes were soon crushed. When you arrive, you can tell the location will be small. That is alright and to be expected. Sometimes, there are some really amazing places tucked into a small building. However, I don't feel like this was the case. There are plenty of good reviews for Kamal, but they probably our from Japanese citizens. This is fine, but a lot of foreigners travel through the area. Some of us like my fiance and I have lived and worked in Japan for a while. It has become home to us, but we both love Indian food. There's a pretty big difference between Indian curry and Japanese curry. As soon as you open the door, you know. You know that yes, this is a curry place, but that it should never be listed anywhere as an Indian restaurant. There are no foreigners from India or Nepal around. None of the staff appear to be. This is not to say someone from Japan or any other country cannot learn to cook Indian or Nepali dishes quite well. However, not here. Not at Kamal. What you see is very much what you get. There is no naan, just plain white Japanese rice to go with your curry (nothing against Japanese rice, but come on! At least serve basmati!). The curry does not seem very Indian at all and falls more towards the side of Japanese curry. Aside from the restaurant looking and smelling like an Indian one (something that it is not), I would have been fine. So, it is a small place with a tight space for dining. Basically, like a Ramen place: you'll be at a bar elbow to elbow with your fellow eaters. If you don't mind being up close and personal with people then this is fine. It is also an everyday part of life in Japan. So, you get used to it pretty quickly. The food came though and it was horrifying to say the least. It looked like a culinary disaster zone and if I were in the United States, I'd be waiting for FEMA or the National Guard to show up and the President to declare the area in a state of emergency. It was beyond bad. I did not think it possible, but I sat down for a meal in a restaurant and I hated it with a fiery passion. I had a vegetable curry. It probably had abut three vegetables in it. As in like, I could spot a potato and two other vegetable-like objects floating in my orange-red flooded bowl of oil and water. I pity the poor unfortunate souls who by chance or accident end up going here looking for a really good Indian meal. Save yourself the heartbreak and find a more authentic place to eat. On the plus side Kamal does offer shakes in three flavours: red, green, and yellow. Unfortunately, they are also God-awful and you will end up having things like cabbage, and pumpkin in your otherwise predominately banana shake.
