立場というのは、馬のつなぎ場を備えた休憩所のことです。小さな広場と湧水池があり、旅人や馬の喉を潤しました。
太田南畝（おおたなんば 蜀山人[しょくさんじん]）が享和２年（1802）に著した『壬戌紀行（じんじゅつきこう）』に「俗に炭焼の五郎坂といふを下れば炭焼の立場あり左に近くみゆる山は権現の山なり。」という記述があります。ここは眺望に恵まれていたので、十三峠の中では特に旅人に親しまれた立場でした。

Miyuru is a mountain of Gongen. " I was blessed with a view here, so I was especially familiar with travelers in the 13th pass.
