★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My partner and I were staying near the Imperial Palace Garden and searching for the best food experiences that Kyoto has to offer...and this izakaya not only offered great food, but the intimate and hospitable familial setting that we have come to love about the city. Although the owner and his wife did not speak fluent English (or French) they were offered excellent suggestions on both the tasting menu (that we opted for as there is no English menu) and things to do around Kyoto. The fish was perfectly grilled and fresh and accompanied with overflowing glasses of sake and beer were just right. Be prepared for a full house around dinner or a quieter setting when you go a bit later...they are known around Kyoto by "those who know" so, make sure you know. A+.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Gakushoku was, put simply, delightful. The owners were terrific; they were warm and welcoming, despite the fact that we didn't speak Japanese. They were kind and patient with us. They chatted with us and other patrons, giving a real familial sense to the experience. Most importantly, the food was outstanding. This was easily the best meal we had while staying in Japan. A few notes: first, at the time we went, they only offered Japanese menus, but don't let that deter you. As I mentioned, the owner was very patient. Just learn how to say "what do you recommend?" and take whatever they suggest. Two, you can expect to pay a little more than you might for izakayas in the area, but you can also expect to get your money's worth. If you are in the area, do not miss out on this place.

Must try: tomato salad, assorted sashimi, assorted tempura. And the rice in soup was great too!
Walk in hungry, walked away satisfied and relaxed.
Note: limited seating, booking recommended !

There is no English menu but the couple that run the place are very accommodating - they speak limited English but the chef asked what we couldn’t eat and sorted a meal of salad, fish tempura and steak - it was clearly the top range of the menu (for three courses and two drinks each came to about £22 a head) but was worth it for the comfortable and familial environment, to speak with people who clearly love their business and sharing it with guests, and a lovely evening :D I wholeheartedly recommend coming here to anyone who can forgive spending the cash and the language barrier !
