★ ★ ★ ★ ★ そば屋があるくらいで待合室・喫煙室・トイレ・谷川岳オブジェ以外特になんにも無い、寂しさだけが募る駅。
ちゃんとした水上のお土産を買うなら、東口を出て左手にある観光協会の建物に入ったほうが良いように思う。
 There are no soba shops, waiting rooms, smoking rooms, toilets, and anything other than the Tanigawadake object.
If you want to buy a proper water souvenir, I think it's better to leave the east exit and enter the tourist association building on your left.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 地方にはよくある新幹線の駅で、都心の駅ビルや商業施設は殆ど皆無にひとしいです。2時間は、無料の駐車場があるのが嬉しいです。
It is a Shinkansen station that is common in rural areas, and there are almost no station buildings or commercial facilities in the city center. I am glad that there is a free parking lot for 2 hours.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 安くて戻るために、ここから徒歩3キロで上越線後閑駅から在来線で東京へ（選択乗車できるなので、乗車券一枚を済み）。 駅周辺は真っ暗、なんと駅名の電光表示もない。そして18時からバスもない。。北海道新幹線奥津軽今別駅に似ている閑散感がある。
在来線との接続がないのはやはり不便、公共交通機関のみ使う人を全然考慮しない。
In order to return cheaply, walk 3km from here to Gokan Station on the Joetsu Line and take a conventional line to Tokyo. The area around the station is completely dark and there is no sign of the station name. And there is no bus from 18:00. . There is a quiet feeling similar to Okunogaru Imabetsu Station on the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
The lack of connection with conventional lines is also inconvenient and does not take into account those who use only public transport.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 新幹線のみの駅で、在来線に乗り換えるときのアクセスは悪いですが、水上駅行きや猿ヶ京温泉行きのバスが出ています。
駅は割と綺麗で設備もそこそこと言った感じだと思います。改札の数が少ないですがそんなに人が降りないのであまり混むことはなさそうです。
It is a Shinkansen only station, and access is poor when transferring to a conventional line, but there are buses bound for Minakami Station and Sarugakyo Onsen.
I think the station is relatively clean and the facilities are decent. The number of ticket gates is small, but it doesn't seem to be crowded because there aren't many people getting off.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 上越新幹線単独の駅で乗車人員は東京~新潟間で一番少ないです。上越新幹線の秘境駅と言われることもありますが、水上や猿ヶ京温泉などの観光地へのバスも出てるのでそれなりに需要はあると思います。
在来線からアクセスする場合、後閑駅から関越交通のバスで10分程で行くことができます。徒歩だと3キロ程離れてますが、冬場は雪で凍ってる箇所もあるので、バスで行くことが無難だと思います。
The number of passengers on a single station on the Joetsu Shinkansen is the smallest between Tokyo and Niigata. It is sometimes referred to as the unexplored station of the Joetsu Shinkansen, but I think there is some demand as there are buses to sightseeing spots such as Minakami and Sarugakyo Onsen.
If you access from the conventional line, you can get there in about 10 minutes by Kanetsu Kotsu bus from Gokan station. It's about 3 kilometers away on foot, but I think it's safe to go by bus because there are places where it's frozen by snow in winter.
