Jakiriiwa Jinja is located in the southeastern part of Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture.
This shrine is located in the mountains upstream of the Yohoro River in Yohoro, Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture.
Deity
unknown
It is a shrine famous for the legend of the sad princess "Jakiriiwa", who fell in love with a big snake but did not fulfill it, entered the water and became a big snake, was defeated by all the villagers, and crashed into a rock and was torn into three.
Along the Yohoro River, there are three shrines that enshrine the rock that collided (Jakiriiwa) and the head, body, and tail that were torn into three for fear of the curse of a large snake.
(The head of the snake is Hioikehime Shrine in Yohoro, the body of the snake is Doden Shrine in Hattanda Minamimachi, and the tail of the snake is Omori Shrine in the forest (Yakagi Shrine))
The precincts are a plaza where more than 10 cars can be parked, and there is a main shrine and a guide board for Jakiriiwa, and if you go along the river indicated by the guide board, you will find Jakiriiwa.
Along the Yohoro River, including the area around the shrine, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the cherry blossoms from the end of March to the beginning of April at "Senbonzakura on the Yohoro River," which is one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in the city.
It is also known as a good water source, and it seems that it used to make wasabi.
From June to July, you can enjoy the fantastic sight of fireflies flying around the Yohoro River around the shrine.
Folktale Village "Jakiriiwa Legend"
Once upon a time, there were beautiful sisters named "Omatsu" and "Oshimo" in Kurobe, Kurahashi Village Tamonin. One day, my sister "Omatsu" met a beautiful young man by a pond in the back mountain of Yohoro, where she went out to mow the grass.
The two who were drawn to each other exchanged the last tears. "Omatsu", who was forced to have a marriage by a parent who did not know it, eventually became known to his sister "Oshimo" between the two, and "Omatsu", which had a long way to go, was in the pond. He threw himself and turned into a big snake.
After a few days, the snake, the lord of the pond, often harmed the villagers. So I consulted to get rid of the big snake to protect the village.
At this time, a man made a name for exterminating the big snake, made a big cow shape with moxa, lit it and threw it into the pond.
After drinking this, the big snake suffered from the moxa burning in his stomach and fluttered. The snake was washed away by the flooded pond water due to the sudden heavy rain. Then, he crashed into a large rock downstream, and his body was immediately cut into three.
The villagers, who were afraid of haunting, had Yohoro's "Hioikehime Shrine" with the head of a large snake, which is the incarnation of "Omatsu" cut into three pieces, and Yukinaga's "Dotanomiya" with the body. , The tail was enshrined in "Omori Shrine".
And the rock that the big snake cut into three was named "Jakiriiwa".
It is a precious folk tale that has been passed down since ancient times and prays for awe for the river and a good harvest.

As you all commented, I couldn't find a big rock that could be split into three by a big snake. I was surprised that the water was beautiful and clear even though there should be a reservoir upstream. When there is a modern concrete dam, the water becomes muddy and the rocks are often polluted with dirty algae. I wonder if the construction technology of the Meiji era can create a pond that blends in naturally.
The shrine is a small but well-built shrine. There was no notice in particular, but the deity was Matsuhime, who became a big snake.

I didn't know which serpentine rocks. It is difficult to join because the road is so narrow.
Let's head for safe driving. The parking lot is large and safe.

Folktales and folklore are interesting. There is no Sengoku Nadeko. It's a pocket gym, but it doesn't do anything because there is no radio wave.
