Since I love knowing different culture and people, I studied in a University in the U.S., but it wasn’t enough for me and I traveled to Africa and South America while studying abroad. When I was traveling I noticed that homemade local food is quite different from food at restaurants, including the atmosphere and preparation. Cooking with local people, having conversation while eating—this is what makes the time more valuable. Of course, I got to know many aspects of their lives by talking. Exposing myself to the local life became one of my best memories in the trip. I would like to share the experience—but this time, as a host. When you travel, sometimes you don’t get the opportunities to talk and ask local people questions. So, I’m here to enrich your experience.

We loved our cooking class with Initia. Our hosts were very welcoming and knowledgeable on traditional Japanese cooking. They answered our many questions (?). The class was very hands on; it was cool to experience it all in a traditional Japanese home. We made chicken teriyaki, sticky rice, miso soup (from scratch!), pickled cucumber and a Japanese pumpkin dish.Thank you for sharing your talents. We left with bellies full and are looking forward to trying Japanese cooking back home.

This was a great class to learn the basics of Japanese meal preparation! I was walked through how to create a Teriyaki meal (with miso soup, rice etc) with great detail. Taro was very friendly and shared his knowledge and experiences in very enjoyable detail.

Amazing experience. We did the tea ceremony and then the cooking class. Taro is a great host and speaks perfect English. We cooked: ・Teriyaki chicken ・Simmered pumpkin ・Light-pickled cucumber ・Rice ・Miso soup Everything was delicious! We recommend you this menu because it's not very difficult to cook and therefore we will be able to cook it back home. If you have time, I definitely recommend you to do a class! ?

Was a great experience at the Initia Japanese Cooking Class with Taro and his beautiful mother. What I liked about the class- 1) It was a small sized class with just 2 families- 2 of us and another couple+kid. So we could all get the personal attention and absorb everything better. 2) Hands on class- we all get to participated in the prepwork and the cooking 3)The food itself was delicious and the items seem simple enough and I can't wait to try out once I get back home! 4) After we finished cooking, we sat down to eat the meal together- we had a v entertaining evening interacting with the other family, sharing our travel stories and getting some recommendations from Taro 5)Taro was v flexible about adjustments in the menu and quite responsive over email. We got all the recipes sent over email as soon as the class was over

I can’t recommend this course enough. Taro and his mum were wonderful hosts, the tutelage was informative and well paced while, most importantly, the food was delicious. Two of my friends don’t eat fish, which, as you may imagine, makes cooking with Japanese ingredients very tricky. Taro carefully and throughly replaced all of the offending items with thoughtfully chosen replacements (as he did for another boy on the course who was a coeliac). Great value for money too. Thanks both!

My wife and I had a great time with Taro and his mother Miyoko. The meal we prepared was a combination of every day dishes and we learned some recipes and techniques that we're excited to try again at home. The other guests came from around the world and we had fun discussing our various trips and over dinner as well as bombarding Taro with questions about Japan. If you're looking for a cooking class in Kyoto I definitely recommend!

My wife and I were in Kyoto for a few days and am really glad to be able to do this cooking class. Taro was such a gracious host, my wife and I enjoyed the intimate atmosphere of learning how to cook Japanese food at Taro’s home. Such a great experience , loved the conversations , cooking , food and company and appreciate I have a little bit of Japan I can take back home through the food Taro and his mom taught us.

The cooking class was very nice. We had a great time with Taro and Miyoko. We cooked Teriyaki chicken with Miso soup and pumpkin. We didnt have to bring any ingredients. They both took the time to explain every step. It was a nice „family-like“ atmosphere. I would gladly recommend this to friends.
