★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I live locally and have visited this shrine many times. I have always enjoyed it. But today I saw they have removed several ancient trees. They have been chopped down and uprooted! This makes me very sad. I hope somebody can give an explanation? The ancient trees made this shrine a beautiful peaceful retreat from the busy city. I loved the old trees. Why have the trees been killed?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely, well kept shrine. There is also a small inari shrine on site. It is also one of the owl spots on Ikebukuro’s owl road.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Owl has been the community symbol of Ikebukuro. Owl in Japanese is Fukurō. The word fukuro is synonym for “fukurou” in Japanese which means protection from hardship. “Fu” meaning no, and “kurou” meaning hardship.
Mitake Shrine located in a quiet residential area has two statues of owl families erected providing good health, good luck, safe birth and happiness to the community.
It's a lovely shrine worth the visit.
