★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ブナ林であるが、二次林である。ここはもともとブナを主体にしつつも、ミズナラ、イタヤカエデ、ウダイカンバ、トチノキ、カツラ、ドロノキなどが混交していた天然林であった。林床は薄暗く、また牛が林間放牧されていたため、餌となるチシマザサは薄くなっていて、牛の脚により適度に耕耘され、施肥されていたわけだ。結果林床はブナの稚樹が生き延びるのに適した環境となっていた。そしてそのような天然林が、戦時中に、薪炭として利用されるために国道近くから皆伐されていった。その結果林床の稚樹が一斉に伸びだし、樹齢のきれいに揃ったブナの純林になったわけだが、その純度は国道に近いほど著しく、国道から離れるほど、昔の面影を残す森林が残されている傾向がある。
鑑賞する立場からはブナの純林は美しいのかもしれないが、混交林の良さを実感している私には、この二次林は「単調」なものに思える。

The forest floor was dim and the cows were grazing in the forest, so the feed for Sasa kurilensis was thin, and it was properly cultivated and fertilized by the legs of the cows. As a result, the forest floor was an environment suitable for the survival of beech saplings. And such natural forests were cleared from near national roads during the war to be used as firewood. As a result, the saplings on the forest floor began to grow all at once and became a pure beech forest with a well-matched age. Tend to be.
From the standpoint of appreciation, the pure beech forest may be beautiful, but to me, who realizes the goodness of mixed forest, this secondary forest seems to be "monotonous".
