★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 江戸時代中期、八尾の豪商、石田利清が開いた私塾。
建物は復原整備されたものだが、当時の雰囲気を醸し出し、ものの見事に修復されている。
一番驚いたのは、伊藤東涯がここで講義した事だ。
彼は儒学者だけでなく中国制度史の専門家だ。
想像する以上に、はるかに高度な講義がその日この塾で行なわれたのだろう。
その場面を思えば、この環山楼がどれだけ価値のある建物かが分かる。
『言語は必ず慎み、少しも暴慢なること勿れ。
君子は己を省みる。人をそしる暇あらんや。
道を曲げずして、よく人心に従う。これ中庸の極みなり。』伊藤東涯
八尾市役所のとなりに、今もひっそりと佇むこの私塾が誇らしくなってくる。
