★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 田中町の非常に狭い集落の中にあります。西側は田んぼが開けていて境内からは飛鳥の風景が広がります。舒明8年(636)年6月、飛鳥の岡に築いた岡本宮が火災で焼失し、舒明天皇は臨時の田中宮たなかのみやを現在の橿原市田中町に築き移り住んだ。舒明12年(640)4月、天皇は伊予行幸から戻ると厩坂宮うまさかのみや（橿原市大軽町）に移り住んだため、田中宮はわずか４年の王宮だった。 その後、この地に居住していた蘇我系の田中氏は田中宮の跡地を譲り受けて氏寺を築いた。地名をとって田中寺という。建立の時期は不明だが、その廃寺跡から出土した軒瓦など
から650年前後には造営されたと推定されている。 北側に天皇薮という名の小山があります。特に何か言われがあるわけではないようです。
