★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Asuka-dera is the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, where the oldest Buddha in Japan lives. It is very much off-the-beaten-path -- visit with a bicycle and pay homage to the ancientness of the site. For 400 or 500 yen a head, you can enter the main hall, where a monk (Japanese only!) will give you the history and disambiguation of the temple. It has been built and rebuilt many times throughout its ancient, sprawling history because it has been burnt to the ground (sometimes by crusade and sometimes by accident).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very well hidden spot, it is easily reached by rental bicycle from Asuka station. I enjoyed seeing this daibutsu more than the one at Nara, because there are far fewer people! We were the only foreigners there
