宮津の代々の藩主家からもあつく信仰され保護を受けたようです。
しかしなぜ日吉神社がここに祀られるようになったのかはよくわからないようです。
山王権現は近江国比叡山の土着神ですが、比叡山に伝教大師最澄が延暦寺を建立して国家鎮護の寺としてからその守護神として威勢が増します。
そして全国に天台宗寺院が建立されるとその鎮守社として山王権現=日吉神社が勧請されたのです。
しかしこの日吉神社のお隣にある如願寺は真言宗。ではなぜ？
一説には如願寺の開基は皇慶で、彼は比叡山延暦寺において天台密教の谷流の開祖とされる人。だからもとは如願寺は天台宗だったのが皇慶が密教の人だったために真言宗に時代とともに変わった。で、皇慶が如願寺の鎮守社として山王権現を勧請し如願寺が改宗後もこちらはそのまま残った、という説。

When Tendai sect temples were built all over the country, Sanno Gongen = Hiyoshi Shrine was solicited as the guardian shrine.
However, Nyoganji Temple next to Hiyoshi Shrine is a Shingon sect. Then why?
According to one theory, Nyoganji was founded by Kokei, who is said to be the founder of the Tendai Esoteric Buddhist valley at Enryakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei. Therefore, Nyoganji was originally a Tendai sect, but it changed to the Shingon sect with the times because Kokei was a esoteric Buddhist. The theory is that Kokei solicited Sanno Gongen as the guardian shrine of Nyoganji Temple, and Nyoganji Temple remained as it was after the conversion.

駐車場はありますが、鉄道の下をくぐり抜け、参拝の階段の横にある坂を上らなければならないので、大きな車では難儀するかもしれません。
