坂上田村麻呂が東征の折、大山咋命に戦勝を祈り、霊験あらたかなるをもって当地甕知に祀る。時に延暦年間と伝えられる。
後冷泉帝の御代、源頼義が安倍貞任との戦いに祈願し奇験を得たるに依り当社に詣で甕知の地を寄附す。後鳥羽帝文治年間（１１８５－１１９０）源義経当社の修理を行わしむ。
天正年間（１５７３－１５９２）三ヶ尻信重当地「丸子館」に舘し、地名を三ヶ尻と改めて領す。又社殿の改築を行う。大正十四年（１９２５）村社に列す。
