奥赤石川林道は、一般車両通行止めとなっており、白神ラインからの入口には鍵がかかったゲートが設けられている。
そのゲートより、緩やかなアップダウンを経て約11km程進んだ所に櫛石山や、クマゲラの森へと続く登山口がある。
登山口からは、明瞭な山道が続いており、途中、沢の流れに出くわすが、よく見れば対岸に山道が続いているのが確認できる。
更に進むと、登山口より約30分でクマゲラの森と、櫛石山山頂への分岐点に差し掛かるが、櫛石山へは分岐点から北へと向かう。
そして少し進むと藪漕ぎとなるが、尾根沿いに進めば、約15分程で櫛石山山頂へと到着できる。
山頂からの眺望は無く、辺りは広葉樹と笹藪に包まれており、周辺にはブナの幹にのこされた熊の爪痕や、食い荒らされたタケノコが多く散乱しており、注意が必要。

The Oku-Akaishi River Forest Road is closed to general vehicles, and there is a locked gate at the entrance from the Shirakami Line.
From the gate, there is a trailhead leading to Kushiishiyama and Black Woodpecker Forest about 11km after going up and down gently.
A clear mountain path continues from the trailhead, and you will come across a stream of streams on the way, but if you look closely, you can see that the mountain path continues on the opposite bank.
If you go further, you will reach the black woodpecker forest and the junction to the summit of Mt. Kushiishi in about 30 minutes from the trailhead, but head north from the junction to Mt. Kushiishi.
If you go a little further, you will be rowing in the bush, but if you go along the ridge, you can reach the summit of Mt. Kushiishi in about 15 minutes.
There is no view from the top of the mountain, and the area is surrounded by broad-leaved trees and bamboo shoots, and there are many bear claw marks on the trunk of beech trees and bamboo shoots that have been devoured, so be careful.
