橋供養の石碑は、長町の伝説である橋姫を供養するために、現在の根岸町にあった木場に働く木場連の人々が、藩政時代の文政6年（1823）建立したものと伝えられる。その後、広瀬橋たもとでそば屋を営業していた南部家で石碑と橋姫祠を預かり、長い間祭祠を執り行ってきた。都市計画道路によって南部家も移転を余儀なくされ、昭和57年（1982）に南部家では仙台市に橋姫明神と橋供養碑、及び永町橋の礎石を寄贈した。
橋姫伝説・・・藩政時代、この地に初めて永町橋（今の広瀬橋）を架けることになったが長雨続きで広瀬川は氾濫し、橋を架けようにも架けられない状態であった。これは竜神様のお怒りに違いないとし、誰言うことなく信心深い若い娘を人柱にしないと橋は架けられないと噂が広まった。そのとき、長町根岸（百代の里）の長者の一人娘が「私が参ります。」と申し出た。娘は儀式に従って十八夜観音堂に籠って断食をした後、川べりの木箱に入り埋められた。祈りの声と鉦の音はしばらく続いたが、やがてそれも消えるように途絶えた。すると川に光が射し、大水は見る見る間に引いて、無事に橋を架けることができた、娘は橋姫として、今も地元で供養が行われている。まさに合掌っす。

It was. This must be the anger of Ryujin, and rumors spread that a bridge could not be built unless a godly young daughter was a human pillar. At that time, the eldest daughter of Nagamachi Negishi (Hundred Village) offered "I will come." The daughter went to Kannon-do at the 18th night according to the ritual, fasted, and buried in a wooden box on the riverside. The voice of prayer and the sound of jealousy continued for a while, but eventually it disappeared. Then, the light shined on the river, and the water was drawn while looking at it, and it was possible to build the bridge safely. The daughter is still being served locally as Hashihime. It ’s just a gassho.
