主祭神 天照皇大神 由緒 往昔今の広瀬川は深沼で海に注いでいたと云う事で、洪水のたび毎に流域が変わるので住民の苦しみは一通りでなかった。その頃、五ッ谷に1人の行人(遠行聖人と云い伝う)が住んでゐた。そこで、多くの村人を水禍から救ふ願を立て自ら進んで、人柱に立つこととなり「土中から私の振る鈴の音が二十一日間、聞こえたなら必ず願望が達せられるであろう」と言って生埋となった。祈願は續けられた。村人は青竹の節を抜いて土中にさしこみ、毎日行人のふる鈴の音に耳を傾けた。二十一日の間、鈴の音は段々弱くなりながらも絶えなかった。その年の秋には大水が出て河の流れがすっかり変わり今の様に閖上に注ぐように定まり、今まで水害に苦しんだ流域は見渡す限りの沃野となり、以来水害の跡を絶つに至り、村人は行人の恩を永く忘れない様に塚を築くと共に、その行人が祈願した神々をも合わせ祀ってから、今日まで神殿を造り崇敬の誠を捧げてゐると伝う。 水害から村人を救おうと人柱になって祈願した行人を弔ったといわれる「行人塚」(ぎょうにんづか)の上に建てられた神社です。昔、広瀬川は大水の度に奔流が河原町から七郷村を横切り、深沼から海に流れたそうです。そして洪水の度に河床が変わり、流域は大変な被害を受けました。五つ谷に住んでいた一人の行人(修験者)が、村人たちを水害から救おうと本願をたて人柱に立つことになりました。「私の振る鈴の音が21日間土中から聞こえたら、大願は成就するであろう」と言って生埋めになりました。竹の節を抜いて土中にさしこみ、鈴の音を聞くこと21日で行人は息絶えたといいます。この年から洪水は流れを変えて閖上に流れ、水害から七郷の村人たちは救われたそうです。村人たちは人柱になった行人の恩を忘れないようにと、塚を築いて弔いました。(若林の歴史散歩より)

かつて、榎の老木の下に行人塚という小さな塚がありました。これは広瀬川の氾濫を防ぐため人柱となった山伏を祀ったものでした。昭和50年にのこの老木が枯れた際に塚の上に建てられたのがこの神社です。古くは、この辺りを行人塚といったようで、今でも近くの踏切に行人塚の名前が残っています。また、古城コミュニテーセンターには碑文があります。 ちなみに、古城神社の住所は河原町で、もう少し東側が今の古城の住所で、伊達政宗の居城があったところです。話の内容からして、古城城の築城の前だったのでしょうね!

とある文書を読むと古城神社の下には人柱になった行者の塚があるという。 その文書らは行者が人柱になったと記述していますが、行者は「人柱」になったのではないようです。 人柱は生贄であり、それは罪人や生贄をささげる人に無関係な人や卑しいとされる人を生贄にするのであり、生贄にされる人の意に反して行われているものです。 行者は広瀬川を司る神にお鎮まりねがうために身をささげたのでなく、御身が信じる神仏の力を信じて行を行ったようです。 私がそう思ったのはこの神社の前に立ち、古峯神社の大きな石板を見たからです。 行者塚の上に神社を立てるときに行者が信じていた神仏の石板を同時に祭ったと記録があります。 古峯神社は日本武尊を祭る神社です。 日本武尊が海を渡るときに荒波が立ちはだかったという話があります。 その為に、日本武尊の妻である弟橘媛が入水し波を静かにしたといわれています。 それ以来、日本武尊は海を制御できる神、つまり海を司る神としてあがめられています。 広瀬川による洪水が起きた時に海のようになったと記録されています。 行者は日本武尊の力をもってすればこの洪水を治めることができると考えたのでしょうか。 神社は「社(やしろ)」というよりも、覆いのようでした。 中には二つの石が置かれていました。 間違いを恐れずに書くと その一つには「観世音菩薩」を意味する梵字が刻まれていました。 洪水から解放された人々は行者を「観音様」と考えたのでしょうか。 きっと、塚の上にこの石を置き、それでも感謝の思いに駆られて覆いを作ったのでしょうか。 覆いは塚の上に作られているのではなく、きっと塚を守るように建てられています。 もう一つの石は外から何が書かれているのか、読み取ることはできませんでした。 しかし、昔の人が洪水に悩まされていて、そこから救ってくれた行者に最大限の崇拝をささげていたことがわかる場所です。 行者のその手法を今の科学は否定するでしょう。でも、その思いや考えを私は否定できない。後世の人が人柱と記述した思いも想像できます。それは「犠牲」になられたという思いがあったのでしょうね。 神社の周囲は掃き清められていました。今も信心を集める場所です。
