★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 追分とは分かれ道、分岐点のこと。ここから旧東海道の脇往還（バイパスみたいなもんですね）、姫街道が分岐しています。姫街道は浜名湖の北岸を迂回して見付（磐田）で再び旧東海道に合流します。
Oiwake is a branch road or branch point. The Himekaido and the Himekaido branch off the old Tokaido. The Himekaido bypasses the north coast of Lake Hamana and joins the former Tokaido again at Mitsuke (Iwata).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 旧東海道は、浜松もしくは見附宿（静岡県磐田市）までの間は姫街道という脇往還がありました。
なんでも浜名湖を越える今切の渡しが増水等で足止めされることが多く、それを嫌って山側ルートである姫街道を選ぶ旅人も多かったそう。
但し、実際は東海道新井関所がかなり厳しい取締りをしていた為（特に女性には）、取締りが比較的緩やかだった気賀関所のある姫街道を選択するケースが多かった、とも言われています（実際気賀関には「犬走り」という抜道が半公然と存在してました）。
確かに姫街道は本坂峠越えなどのアップダウンのあるコースであり、敢えて選ぶ必然性は乏しいように感じます。
まあ、お稲荷様で有名な豊川稲荷を見たい、という観光目的もあったかもしれませんね。
On the old Tokaido, there was a side trip called Hime Kaido between Hamamatsu and Mitsuke-juku (Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture).
The ferry crossing over Lake Hamana was often stalled due to flooding, and many travelers disliked it and chose the Hime Kaido route on the mountain side.
However, in reality, the Tokaido Arai Sekisho had a fairly strict crackdown (especially for women), so it is said that there were many cases in which the Hime Highway with the Kiga Checkpoint, where the crackdown was relatively loose, was selected (actually). In Kiga Seki, there was a semi-open road called "Berm").
It is true that Hime Highway is a course with ups and downs such as crossing the Honsaka Pass, and I feel that there is little need to choose it.
Well, there may have been a sightseeing purpose to see Toyokawa Inari, which is famous for Inari.
