★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 浄土宗の寺院。願行寺は，北六番丁の仙岳院（のちに清浄光院萬日堂に移る），東八番丁の常念寺とともに仙台三回向（えこう）寺の一つで、仙台市民からは「オエゴデラ・オイゴデラ（大回向寺）」として親しまれてきました。
大回向の始まりは第四代仙台藩伊達綱村の時代に、飢饉や災害で亡くなった人々の供養や豊作を祈願した念仏行を行った事が始まりで、その後1780年代の天明の大飢饉の救済のために、仙台城下の「願行寺」「常念寺」「清浄光院萬日堂」において三年一回り、一年ずつ交代で5月13日から15日までの３日間を用いて念仏行を行うようになったといわれています。
仙台駅東第二土地区画整理事業（昭和63年～平成32年度）に境内が区画整理の対象となり、平成11年（1999年）に墓地が葛岡へ移転しています。本堂や客殿が平成16年（2004年）に改修されています。
 A temple of the Jodo sect. Gyogyo-ji Temple is one of the three Eko-ji temples in Sendai, along with Sengakuin Temple in Kita Rokubancho (later moved to Seijokoin Mannichido) and Jonenji Temple in Higashihachibancho. It has been popular among the citizens as "Oegodera Oigodera".
The beginning of the great transfer of merit began during the time of Date Tsunamura, the 4th Sendai Domain, when a memorial service was held to pray for the memorial service and good harvest of those who died in the famine and disaster. For relief, we will spend three days at "Gyogyo-ji", "Jonen-ji", and "Seijokoin Mannichido" under Sendai Castle, taking turns every year from May 13th to 15th. It is said that he began to practice Nembutsu.
The precincts were subject to land readjustment during the Sendai Station East No. 2 Land Readjustment Project (1988-2020), and the graveyard was relocated to Kuzuoka in 1999. The main hall and guest hall were renovated in 2004.
