It is about 10 minutes walk from the suspension bridge. * Caution: There is no toilet on the way. We recommend that you do it first. I'm a little tired because it's an up and down promenade. It was a turret, so I felt it was a little shabby.

It is quietly placed in a hidden place. The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace in Nirayama is famous as the place where the cannon was made at that time, so if you have been there, the knowledge will be linked. It is difficult to walk from the parking lot on the Jogasaki coast, but if you are interested, please do.

It's amazing that I was making a battery in such a place! At that time, I think it was difficult just to carry bullets and gunpowder.

There seems to be no way to get to this place except to park your car at the municipal parking lot on the Jogasaki coast and walk along the hiking course. It seems that there is only a replica stand, a cannon, and a description now, but you can see that there was a cannon stand for defense against the black ship here.

It is a battery built in preparation for the arrival of the Black Ships in Edo at the end of the Edo period. It is currently maintained as the Jogasaki coast. There is a parking lot, but I walk a little. Also, the cannon has been restored. (It's not real)

Cross the suspension bridge and walk along the promenade while looking at the rugged coast, and you will find the remains of the battery.

If you take a walk along the Jogasaki coast and go further, you will find the "Kurofune Defense Battery Site". Very few people go to this area as expected. If you look closely, a stone wall is made, and it seems that the dents on the back side of the replica cannon are made by hand-building rocks. It is said that several such batteries were built during the visit to Kurofune. It is a replica cannon on display, but the same one was on display when I went to the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace. Please see that if you like.

Although we arrived early to shoot the coastline, it was already very hot and humid by 6:00 a.m. (during summer). I had to give my border collie many short rests as we hiked the Jogasaki Coast trail (Jogasaki Picnical Course) into the humid woodlands that flourish atop the jagged cliffs of the Jogasaki coastline. There are some placards and an old canon that was set in place at the end of the Edo Period to protect Edo from the approach of warships from the U.S. Navy under the direction of Commodore Perry. Most of the information is in Japanese, but you can find more details online with some English translation. Along the trail, you can hear a number of different birds, the most visible being Japanese black-eared kite (鳶 / tonbi or tobi). This raptor can be found throughout most of Japan, and there were many flying gracefully over the cliffs and sea stacks of Jogasaki Coast. Unlike other raptors, the black kite is a scavenger. So, I wasn’t surprised to see them near the Jogasaki coastline following the many fishing boats sailing up and down the coast hauling in their catch from the deep coastal waters. In sharp contrast with the volcanic rock, there were many day lily growing on barren outcrop of volcanic rock that jut out into the sea. This particular type of lily can be seen in other rocky and inhospitable-looking areas along the Jogasaki Nature Study Course—a trail that extends for almost 10 km along the Jogasaki coastline. Video of this visit can be see at the Pix4Japan YouTube channel.
