当寺は永禄３年(1560年)の創立である。元々は青垣町桧倉の西天目山高原寺の末寺であった。その後、寛文２年(1661年)に池田市の佛日寺の末寺となり黄檗宗に改宗し、黄檗３代管長慧林禅師を勧請開山として黙堂禅師が初代住職に就任した。現在の住職は１８代に及んでいる。
本尊阿弥陀如来像は恵心僧都の作であり、丹波市の文化財に指定されている。仏像の腹中には本尊縁起の巻物が秘蔵されていた。これによると、「北野村頓誉が篠山村光忠寺より、仏像を拝受しその死後甥である武右衛門が畑久右衛門の仲介により寄進し、元禄十五年に祭った」と書かれてある。尚、石生新町にある西来庵ならびにあった光方寺は、当寺の末寺であった。本堂の向かって右にある観音堂は、イソべ神社の神宮寺だったものを明治３６年(１９０３年)に大改修し、移し建てたもので、馬頭観音像を祭る。

The Kannon-do, which is on the right side of the main hall, was renovated and relocated from the Jingu-ji Temple of Isobe Shrine in 1903, and is dedicated to the statue of the horse head Kannon.
