国府とは奈良時代頃に全国の国ごとに置かれた役所のことで、香川県は当時は讃岐の国と呼ばれ国府は讃岐国府と呼ばれていました。この地は讃岐国府の印（国印）と鑰（鍵）の保管施設があったとと考えられている場所です。

「国府印鑰明神遺跡」田んぼの端に立つ石碑です。国府とは奈良時代頃に全国の国ごとに置かれた役所のことです。現在の香川県丁のある場所は高松市ですが、当時の中心は国分寺あたりでした。当時香川県は讃岐の国と呼ばれ国府は讃岐国府と呼ばれていました。この地は讃岐国府の印（国印）と鑰（やく：鍵の意味）の保管施設があったとと考えられている場所です。説明板に「付近には．．．印鑰（いんやく、国庁の印鑑・鍵の保管所）．．．などの地名があり」とあったので、この地に「印鑰」の名を冠した神社があったのではないでしょうか。因みに、印鑰は国庁の印鑑・鍵の保管所ですが、保管所の意味は含まれず、「官印と官庁の倉庫の鍵」とあります。ちなみに印鑰神社は、ここ、坂出市のみならず、山形市、七尾市、福岡市、佐賀市、久留米市、八代市、西都市にもあり、国府機能が衰退してから、大切な印鑰を神社の御神体として祀るようになったのではないかと思われます。
