Through the gates of Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto’s must-see attractions. It's a bustling temple filled with people and a collision of worlds. Kiyomizu-dera had been marked in my map as one of the most important spot in my Kyoto visit. As I made my way up the crowded street in the preserved district, a slightly sloping alleyway of shops and food stalls, I would reach the red gates of its front door. Majestically looming at the top of the perched, it is but only a preview of the beauty I'm about the enjoy. Kiyomizu-dera Temple is on @UNESCO’s World Heritage Site as a historic monument of Ancient Kyoto. I had not prepared myself for the visit to Kyoto. I’ve done very little research prior to my visit outside of pinning down a few sites. And even when I’m here I didn’t take the time to study further. But you don’t have to enjoy Kiyomizu-dera that way. Nor does it have to be measured by the amount of selfies you take. Kyoto was different for me. I felt like I transported myself back to the 8th century. With so many people walking around in traditional Japanese yakutas, it does feel like you’re in Ancient Japan. Exactly as I had expected from a popular temple in Kyoto. Crowded, noisy, with heaps of people. But look past the crowd. Drown out the noise. What remains is a majestic place that holds many pockets of peace. Try to find it. I was here at Spring, right after cherry blossom season and the main hall unfortunately was under construction. But it doesn’t take away the breathtaking vistas from the path further up. The view of the main hall with the pagoda against the Kyoto backdrop changes by the seasons and every season express differing personalities. Perhaps Kiyomizu-dera shows its most personable side in autumn when warm colours flood the park below and cast a glow of brown and bright orange against a setting sun. Honda, Kiyomizu-dera’s main hall is a heap of engineering. Not a single nail was used right beneath the hall is the Otawa waterfalls. Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water where it flows to the ponds below the main hall. Drink from here, and your wish might be granted. The view of the park from the main hall. The waters from Otawa flows below and you can already glimpse a line waiting to drink from it. Apparently if i take a plunge into the waters from here, all my wish will come true, if I survive that is. I took one look at the height, counted the probability of success and …… NAH. I’ll just go lined up for the water below.
