★ ★ ★ ★ ★ こんなところが源流地？
元荒川はここを源流として、大宮を抜けて越谷にて古利根川と合流、中川と名前を変えて東京湾に注ぎます。
こんな街中の平地で、しかも土手を挟んだ向こうは荒川のここが、そんな大きな河川の源流地というのはなんか不自然です。
よくある例としては、山深い奥地から染み出る湧水や、山に囲まれた大きな湖から、といったイメージなのですが...。
調べたら（という程ではないのですが）、やはり理由がありました。
江戸時代以前は名前の通り元荒川が本流でしたが、江戸の町が度々の水害に悩まされていたため、荒川の一本西を流れていた入間川に瀬替えを実施しました。
そのため、ここは堤を築いて締め切ったため、源流地となったのです。
同時期に利根川は逆に東の渡良瀬川、常陸川に瀬替えされており、江戸の都市の真上で合流して大暴れしていた二大河川を分離することで、江戸を水害から守ったのです。
まるで、学校の二大ヤンキーが一緒になってつるむとろくなことがないので、先生達はわざとヤンキー二人を別のクラスにして、学校の安寧を保つようにしたのと同じ発想ですね。

Before the Edo period, the Motoara River was the main stream as the name suggests, but since the town of Edo was suffering from frequent floods, the Iruma River, which was flowing west of the Arakawa River, was replaced.
Therefore, the bank was built and closed, and it became the headwaters.
At the same time, the Tone River was replaced by the Watarase River and Hitachi River in the east, and by separating the two major rivers that had merged directly above the city of Edo and were rampaging, Edo was protected from flood damage. It was.
It's as if the two big Yankees in the school weren't sloppy together, so the teachers deliberately put the two Yankees in different classes to keep the school safe.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 元荒川は江戸時代の荒川西遷事業で荒川が和田吉野川に付け替えられ、山地水源から切り離された旧流路が元荒川として現存している・・・ということは、話しとしては知っていますが、この現場を見ると頭でわかっていたことが崩壊します。
この200mくらい先に現在の荒川が流れていて、西遷以前には同じ水量がここを流れていたはず。いくら締め切ったとはいえ「コレはないでしょ」というのが実感です。
カスリン台風では西遷で締め切った箇所が破堤したとありますが、無いに等しい旧流路ではどうにもならなかったでしょうね。
